How Sun Tunnels Bring Daylight Where Skylights Can’t
Some rooms are just too far from the roof. An interior bathroom in the middle of a house, a closet under a deep attic, a hallway with ductwork right above it. A full skylight would need a huge shaft. A sun tunnel needs a 10 or 14-inch path.
On the roof, a small clear dome captures sunlight. Below it, a rigid tube lined with a highly reflective specular coating bounces that light down through the attic. At the ceiling, a diffuser spreads it across the room. The result is real daylight in a room that never had a window.
The 6 Dark Toronto Spaces Sun Tunnels Convert
- Interior bathrooms and powder rooms with no exterior wall.
- Walk-in closets where colour matters.
- Upstairs hallways with doors closed on both sides.
- Stairwells in the middle of the house.
- Laundry rooms and pantries.
- Small home offices in converted bedrooms with tiny windows.
Residential Sun Tunnel Installations
Bathrooms
The most common request. Interior powder rooms and upstairs windowless baths are exactly the spaces Velux TGR tubes were designed for, and a 10-inch or 14-inch tube can light a small bath without any window at all. From $1,800 CAD installed in under half a day, with only a small round hole in the ceiling.
Closets
True colour light, which is exactly what walk-in closets need for picking navy from black in the morning. A 10-inch Velux TGR is the right tube for most closets because the space is small and the goal is colour accuracy, not raw brightness. Installed in under half a day with only a small hole in the ceiling drywall.
Hallways
14-inch tubes for longer halls. Upstairs hallways with doors closed on both ends are dark even during the day, and a single 14-inch Velux TGR can light 20 to 30 linear feet of corridor with real daylight. Pricing starts at $2,200 CAD installed for the 14-inch size, and most hallway installs are done by lunch.
Stairwells
Daylight at the landing where a windowless stairwell feels unsafe and dim. A 14-inch Velux TGR run to the mid-landing ceiling turns a closed-in stair into a daylight space, and we plan the tube path so it does not interfere with framing or ductwork. Most stairwell installs run $2,200 to $2,900 CAD.
Kitchens With Deep Attics
Supplement under-cabinet lighting where the counter runs are too far from any window to get useful daylight. A sun tunnel in the middle of the ceiling drops soft daylight onto the prep zone and cuts down on how often the kitchen lights run during the day. We size the tube to the attic depth so we are not overpaying for length that does nothing.
New Builds
Seaton, Cornell and Harrison interior rooms. New-build subdivisions are our bread and butter for sun tunnels, since the attic paths are predictable and the trusses are usually 24 inches on centre, which fits a 14-inch tube with one elbow. We coordinate with the builder so the rough-in is done before drywall closes the ceiling, which keeps the install to a single short visit.
Condo Townhouses
Top-floor interior rooms with board approval. We supply COI for the board package and handle the status certificate form, so the approval does not stall. A 10 or 14-inch Velux TGR brightens the upstairs hall or interior bath, and the install is a single short visit with no drywall mess for the unit below.
Commercial Sun Tunnel Installations
Offices
Interior meeting rooms and corridors where staff spend the day without a window in sight. A 14-inch Velux TGR over a boardroom table or down a windowless corridor is a noticeable upgrade to the working environment, with zero maintenance and no switch to remember. Installed in a half day per unit with minimal disruption.
Retail Back-of-House
Stock rooms and staff areas where back-of-house staff often work all day without any natural light at all. A 14-inch TGR over a stockroom desk or fitting area is a low-cost morale upgrade and usually pays back in productivity. We schedule installs around business hours and stage materials through the back door.
Clinics
Interior exam rooms where daylight is known to help with patient comfort and staff alertness. A 10 or 14-inch Velux TGR over an exam chair adds real daylight without compromising ceiling sterility, since the diffuser is flush and wipeable. We coordinate with clinic schedules so the room is only briefly offline.
Schools
Washrooms and corridors in interior wings where a window is not possible. A 14-inch TGR over a windowless washroom or a long corridor changes the feel of the space and helps with daytime alertness. We work with school boards to schedule installs outside school hours or during break weeks, and our WSIB-covered in-house crews carry their own fall protection.
Specialty Sun Tunnel Options
10-Inch TGR
Compact spaces like closets, small powder rooms and short hallways. Priced from $1,800 to $2,400 CAD installed and bright enough for any room under about 80 square feet. This is the size we reach for first because most sun tunnel jobs are smaller rooms and the lower price is a real benefit.
14-Inch TGR
Larger rooms and halls where the 10-inch tube would leave the room underlit. Priced from $2,200 to $2,900 CAD installed, and the right pick for hallways, stair landings and main-floor family rooms lit from a deep attic. The light gain over the 10-inch is significant on longer runs.
Elbows and Extensions
For complex attic paths where the run needs to bend around framing, ducts or HVAC line sets. Each elbow costs a little light, which is why we plan the path with as few bends as we can. Long runs with multiple elbows push a job toward the $2,900 to $4,500 CAD band.
Light Kits
Optional night lighting in some diffusers, so the same opening gives daylight by day and LED light by night without two separate fixtures on the ceiling. An electrician can wire the kit on the same visit, and we coordinate that trade when we scope the job. Priced as an add-on to the standard diffuser.
Low-Slope Flashing
For flatter roofs where the standard pitched flashing would not sit correctly. We carry low-slope flashing kits for shingle, TPO and membrane roofs so the dome seals the same way it would on a steeper pitch. Worth specifying up front because the wrong flashing is the most common retrofit issue we see on older sun tunnels.
Sun Tunnel Components
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| Roof dome | Captures sunlight, sealed with flashing collar |
| Rigid tube | Highly reflective specular lining |
| Elbows | Route the tube around framing and ducts |
| Diffuser | Spreads light evenly in the room |
Our Sun Tunnel Expertise
We trace the attic path on the first visit so there are no surprises. Short, straight rigid runs give the most light, so we plan around ducts and framing to keep it that way.
What Actually Stops Homeowners From Adding a Sun Tunnel
“They don’t give much light.”
In our opinion, that reputation comes from flexible tubes. Rigid Velux TGR tubes are a different story.
“It’ll leak like a skylight.”
It is flashed like a skylight and covered by our flashing warranty. The Velux TGR roof dome sits on a flashing collar with ice and water shield underneath, the same detail we use on a full Velux skylight, and the install is paired against our founder’s daylighting checklist before we leave.
“It’ll wreck my ceiling.”
Only a small round hole for the diffuser, and the surrounding ceiling usually does not need to be touched at all. We cut from above in the attic, fit the tube, then drop the diffuser through the finished ceiling. Most homeowners are surprised how clean the room looks when we are done.
“I need a permit.”
Usually not, because sun tunnels fit between rafters or trusses without cutting them. The Velux TGR 10-inch passes through a standard 24-inch on-centre bay and the 14-inch fits the same bay with one bend. If the framing has to be touched, we will tell you on the assessment and the permit is on the quote.
Sun Tunnel Timeline
Assessment
Attic path check, framing layout, and a quick roof inspection for the dome location. We confirm roof orientation, measure the run from attic hatch to ceiling diffuser, and identify anything that would push the install toward the high end of our $1,800 to $4,500 CAD band. Most assessments take under an hour on site.
Ordering
About a week for the standard Velux TGR 10 or 14-inch kit from our local Velux supply. Custom tube lengths, extra elbows and specific flashing for tile or metal roofs can push delivery to two weeks. We order the moment the quote is signed so the clock starts right away.
Install
Half a day, with the dome flashed, the rigid tube run and sealed, and the diffuser fitted flush with the ceiling. We do the install against our founder’s daylighting checklist and test the unit before we leave. Most homeowners are surprised how little dust and drywall work is involved.
Done
No drywall finishing needed in most cases because we cut the ceiling hole from above and the diffuser drops into a clean round opening. The room looks like it has always had the sun tunnel, and there is no second visit from a drywall finisher. Honestly, that is part of why people pick sun tunnels over a full skylight shaft.
Sun Tunnel Cost in Toronto: What You Are Paying For
Tube Size
10 or 14 inch, which is the main driver of where you land inside our published $1,800 to $4,500 range. The 10-inch is our default for closets and small baths, the 14-inch for halls and larger rooms. We size up only when the room is big enough to actually need the extra light.
Tube Length
Longer runs cost more because each rigid section is a fixed length and the labour scales with the number of joins. Single-storey homes with shallow attics usually fall at the low end of the band, while deep attic runs and long ranch-style bungalows push into the middle. We measure the path on the assessment so this is honest, not a guess.
Elbows
Each adds a little light loss and cost, so we only use them where the attic path forces it. Two 45-degree elbows lose less light than a single 90, which is why we plan the tube to use the longer angles when the framing allows. Each elbow is itemized on the quote so you can see what the bend costs in dollars and in lumen output.
Roof Type
Tile and metal need different flashing than asphalt shingle, and the flashing kit is matched to the roof before we order. We carry Velux flashing for shingle, tile, standing seam and membrane roofs so the dome seals the way the manufacturer specifies. Wrong flashing is the most common retrofit issue we see, which is why we confirm it on the assessment.
Diffuser Options
Standard or light kit, with the light kit adding the ability to use the same ceiling fixture as a night light. The standard diffuser spreads daylight evenly across the room and is the pick for most hallways and baths. The light kit option is a small add-on we recommend when there is no other ceiling fixture nearby.
Access
Tight attics take more time, and the labour difference shows up on the quote. Low-slope roofs with blown-in insulation, HVAC line sets running across the path, or a hatch too small to bring a tube section through all add time. We measure the hatch and the path on the assessment so this is not a surprise on install day.
Sun Tunnel vs Skylight vs Replacement: Which Service You Need
Room right under the roof with space for a shaft: residential skylight installation. Interior room, small space or deep attic: sun tunnel. Existing tired tube: replacement with a rigid TGR.
Fixed, Venting or Solar: Choosing Your Skylight Type
Sun tunnels are fixed daylight only. If you also need ventilation, a venting or solar skylight is the better choice.

Why Toronto Homeowners Choose Our Sun Tunnels
Certified for both Velux and Fakro since 2004, with WSIB-covered in-house crews who do the flashing themselves instead of handing it to a trade that does not know the Velux detail. Every sun tunnel we install is paired against our founder’s daylighting checklist, the dome is seated on a proper flashing collar, and itemized quotes list the permit as its own line at cost when one is even needed. Rigid tubes, proper flashing and a half-day install. We specd the TGR because it simply delivers more light.
